We are often told that “productivity” is about doing more. But for the artist, productivity is almost always about doing less. Today, I looked at my task list and realized that it wasn’t a list of priorities; it was a list of distractions masquerading as progress.

Focus requires subtraction. It is the ability to look at ten interesting projects and say “no” to nine of them so that the tenth one has the air it needs to breathe. Every time you say “yes” to something trivial, you are quietly saying “no” to your best work.

I spent the morning ruthlessly editing my day. I crossed off the tasks that were safe, easy, and ultimately meaningless. It is a terrifying exercise because it leaves you with only the work that is difficult and important. Cross off the least important task on your list today. Don’t reschedule it. Delete it.
