Digital Fasting in the Dark
Reclaiming the Evening
As the evenings grow longer, I’ve found that the glow of a screen feels increasingly intrusive. There is a disharmony between the natural pull toward hibernation and the frantic, artificial light of the digital world.
I have started “digital fasting” from 7:00 PM onwards. By removing the constant stream of input, I am forced to contend with the actual state of my own mind. It is uncomfortable at first—the silence is loud—but after an hour, my imagination begins to stir in a way it never does when it’s being fed by an algorithm. The dark is where the best ideas hide.
The Monroe Minute
Turn off all screens two hours before bed tonight. Read by a single lamp or simply sit in the quiet.
Until the next page,
