I had to visit the archives today to look at a map from the late nineteenth century. I could have found a digital scan in seconds, but I needed to see the physical object. I needed to see the way the ink had faded into the grain of the paper and feel the fragility of the edges.

Digital research gives us facts, but physical research gives us atmosphere. The scent of a basement library, the coldness of a marble table, the weight of an old ledger—these are the details that actually make it into the prose. We don’t just write with our brains; we write with our senses.
